  • Help Support TCHS with Crosby Cats

    We need your help.

If you recall, for the past few weeks Tri-County Humane Society has been low on cats, to the point that we had temporarily waived our intake fees for kittens because we had the space and resources for them. Well, word got out that we had room!

We were contacted by the Minnesota Federated Humane Societies a couple of weeks ago, asking us if we would have the space to take 50 or so cats once they were able to remove them from a residence in Crosby. Since we had the space, we agreed to help.

They were able to remove the cats yesterday (April 11), and what they thought would be around 50 cats ended up being 102. Ninety-four of them arrived at our shelter last night at 5:30. Two of the Minnesota Federated Humane Societies staff and about a dozen of our staff worked until 10:30 p.m. assessing the cats, vaccinating them, treating them for fleas, getting fluids in the ones who were dehydrated, and setting them up in clean cages with food and water.

One of the cats we received was actually microchipped, and when we contacted the owner last night they told us their cat had gone missing seven years ago! They drove to Tri-County Humane Society from Crosby and were reunited with their cat last night.

It was an exhausting and emotional day for all, and it’s just the beginning. The Crosby Police Department has sent out a news release advising anyone who is missing cats in the Crosby area to contact us, so we will be treating the 93 cats as strays and holding them for the required five business days to see if we can reunite other cats with their owners. (See the bottom of this post for what to do if you think there’s a chance we might have your cat.)

Every cage and kennel in our shelter is now full, requiring extra staffing, not to mention the veterinary care, medications, spaying and neutering, and more that we will be investing in these animals. Our compassionate staff and volunteers are up for the challenge, but we truly need your support now.

    Some ways you can help:

    >>Help us reunite cats with their former homes! If you know anyone from the Crosby area who has lost a cat, even if it has been several years, have them email a picture of their cat and their contact information to pets@tricountyhumanesociety.org. We’ll need their name, address, and phone number (this information will be just internal to staff), as well as some basic details about the cat (age, sex, altered status, and how long it’s been missing). Because of the volume of this case, it will take us a bit to do cross-referencing. We appreciate everyone’s patience.

    >>Donate funds to help with veterinary expenses through this page, or stop in and make your donation with us at the shelter in person.

    >>Donate cat or kitten kibble, pate cat food, new litter scoops, or non-clumping cat litter. (Or buy these items from our Re-Tail Shoppe and donate them back.)

    >>Adopt! As early as Wednesday, April 17, the stray hold on these cats could be released, and they will be looking for loving homes.

We can only do what we do because of support from people like you. Donations of time and talent by hundreds of volunteers, donations of products and services by area businesses and donations of money — very close to half of our budget — by so many people who care.
